I have a client who works for someone else and believes that since that person is connected with all the “right” people, it’s just a matter of time before the doors of opportunity swing open for them, too.
There are problems with this approach.
Waiting on other people to provide an opportunity for us is a passive approach that usually leads to two things.
First, we miss the other opportunities available to us because we’ve put on blinders – only seeing that our “chance” can come through one person in one way.
Second, we create an expectation for that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which often leads to disappointment when it doesn’t turn out the way we envisioned.
Our relationships are one of our most valuable resources, but at the end of the day, it’s up to us to create all of our own opportunities.
Here is the 3-2-1 on this aspect of the Attitude of Opportunity.
3 TRUTHS
- We need to take an active approach to our relationship with money by looking for (not waiting on) impactful opportunities and connections.
- When we wait on others to provide our opportunity, we hand them our power. We make them responsible for our success rather than owning that role ourselves.
- Opportunity requires execution, not just visualization. We must be willing to take action.
2 ACTIONS
- Make new connections. Seek out podcast opportunities, ask friends to introduce you to new people, or send a short note to someone you’ve been following but haven’t spoken to yet.
- Create your own opportunity. Even if you can’t execute it this week, start planning an event, meetup, new offer, or something else that gives you the chance to engage with people.
1 QUESTION
- What other opportunities am I missing because I’m too focused on the one opportunity I expect someone else to provide?
